Cate Places First—Golden Quill Writing Contest

Congratulations to the winners of the 27th annual SLO NightWriters Golden Quill Writing Contest! Winners and finalists in three different categories have just been announced. Judges awarded Cate’s essay, “The Auction,” first place for creative nonfiction and have invited her to read it aloud at the awards ceremony on Tuesday, November 14. Cate is honored and excited. After awarding Cate second place in the spring 2017 flash fiction contest, WOW! Women on Writing interviewed her about her inspiration, her flash fiction piece “A Note in the Margin,” her professional life, and her upcoming novel, “Turning Toward Eden.”

WOW! Women on Writing Award

The winners of the Spring 2017 WOW! Women On Writing Flash Fiction Contest were announced today! Entries could be no more than 750 words. Cate is delighted that her piece, “A Note in the Margin” placed 2nd! Her story is dedicated to Theresa McCourt, her neighbor and friend, gifted artist and poet, who outran the wind of primary progressive aphasia on April 30, 2017.

Ingrid Reti Literary Award

Winning first place in the 2017 Ingrid Reti Literary Award Contest, sponsored by ARTS Obispo, Cate’s essay, “Echoes of Armenia,” addresses the sense of place that informs our cultural identities. The win garnered her an invitation to present a workshop on Armenia during Global Awareness Day at Teach Elementary School. Fourth through sixth graders learned to write the first letter of their names in the unique alphabet, joined in the Battle Dance of the Rams, and listened to the legend of Tamerlame the Terrible, all while enjoying traditional semolina cake. Each student got a “passport” stamp to commemorate this journey to one of the world’s most ancient nations.
